Today brought some earth-shattering news that nobody saw coming in any way, at all, ever: Nintendo is releasing an SNES Classic Edition.

I know this may come as a complete and total surprise to everyone here but TB and I actually managed to put every ounce of our gaming industry knowledge together and figured out that this might be coming. Please, hold your applause.

As such, we both came up with some prediction lists about which games may be included. So let’s see how we did! Note, I left the organization the same as when we both originally posted them.

27. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
28. Super Ghouls’N Ghosts
29. Super Bomberman
30. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

So, how did we actually do? Well, we both went under the assumption that the SNES Classic would follow the NES Classic’s example and include 30 games. We were wrong. Nintendo decided to cut 9 titles and only include 21 which is kind of a bummer. Here’s the list of games officially confirmed for the SNES Classic Edition:

  1. Contra III: The Alien Wars
  2. Donkey Kong Country
  3. EarthBound
  4. Final Fantasy III
  5. F-ZERO
  6. Kirby Super Star
  7. Kirby’s Dream Course
  8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  9. Mega Man X
  10. Secret of Mana
  11. Star Fox
  12. Star Fox 2
  13. Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  14. Super Castlevania IV
  15. Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  16. Super Mario Kart
  17. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  18. Super Mario World
  19. Super Metroid
  20. Super Punch-Out!!
  21. Yoshi’s Island

Not too much that’s actually any surprise at all, right? Pretty much everything we’d expect except…

Return of Shock Monkey!

Yeah, take another look at number 12 there. STAR FOX 2! You may be thinking to yourself, “hmm… I don’t remember playing Star Fox 2 as a kid. Is that another name for Star Fox 64?” NOPE! The reason you don’t remember Star Fox 2 is because it was never actually released. ROMs of development builds have been floating around forever but the game was never officially released until now. Depending on what kind of build we’ll be getting here, be it a development build or an actually complete version of the game, this is could be huge for gaming historians.

So anyway, onto the actually important stuff, we have to figure out who won!

TB – 19 correct, 2 missed

Crosstix – 19 correct, 2 missed

WE HAVE A TIE! Actually, both TB and I guessed the vast majority correct but he missed Kirby’s Dream Course (betting on Kirby’s Dream Land 3 instead) and I missed Final Fantasy III plus we both missed Star Fox 2. Technically speaking, we both guessed the wrong version of Street Fighter 2 they’d include but we did both include some form of Street Fighter 2 on our list. I’m counting that as a win since it’d be more accurate to guess which version they’d pick by throwing a dart at a board. Also, TB said Super Contra instead of Contra III: The Alien Wars but since Super C is actually an NES game, I’d say it’s safe to give him the benefit of the doubt here and assume he meant to say the only SNES Contra game: Contra III: The Alien Wars.

As a possible tie-breaker here, I want to throw out one thing stated in the comments section for TB’s predictions. The whole comment has been left in for context:

Crosstix Comment
My comment on TB’s SNES Classic Wish List

While it didn’t make my actual list, when spit-balling ideas, I did actually post, in writing, Star Fox 2 making it to the SNES Classic, albeit as something that would likely never happen. I’ll leave that up to you all to determine whether or not that counts or if this remains a tie game.

Game on!
